Summary on Grant Application Form |
Many important engineering applications (e.g. in drag reduction, hydro- and aeroelasticity, structure-borne sound measurements and control) involve the interaction between a flowing fluid and a flexible structure in the form of a plate or panel. Most theoretical treatments of flow/structure interaction completely ignore viscous effects when modelling the fluid dynamics. In the few cases for which viscous effects are included the panel is invariably idealized as infinitely long. Our recent work has shown that not only are viscous effects important in such flow/structure interactions, but even very long panels cannot be realistically modelled as infinitely long. Accordingly we propose to develop numerical simulation methods for studying the interaction between a finite flexible panel and a viscous shear flow. We will the go on to apply these methods to investigations of various model problems reflecting current practical interests.
