Summary on Grant Application Form |
Semiconductor dimensions which can be enabled by lithographic techniques are currently approaching their theoretical limit, and future progress towards further miniaturisation will require a hydbrid technology which interfaces state of the art nanofabrication methods with molecular materials. The research outlined in this programme will involve molecular materials being addressed by metalic nanostructures produced within the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Glasgow, with the aim of making simple electronic devices. Compounds which will be studied include conducting polymers, charge transfer crystals, and derivitised synthetic peptides. A repulsive mode atomic force microscope (AFM) will be used to locate and check the integrity of the hybrid-devices and to control charge transfer processes through the molecular materials. In this latter role, the AFM tip will be used as a potentiometric gate, which will be able to address individual molecules or groups of molecules with a high degree of precision.
