Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will examine microscopic processes that play important roles in macroscopic modelling of solidification phenomena. From a mathematical viewpoint we will formulate and solve nonlinear partial differential equations for temperature composition and velocity with boundary conditions specified at moving interfaces. From a metallurgical viewpoint, the theoretical and experimental results will contribute to better control of the properties of materials through a deeper understanding of microscale formation. Our work will include the following: i) A theoretical analysis of nonlinear convective flows through specified regular and randomly spaced arrays of thin dendrites. We will extend techniques developed in slender body theory and develop averaged equation approaches to consider flows around random arrays. ii) We will analyse effects of non-equilibrium thermo-dynamics within mushy layers by obtaining solutions to the governing nonlinear partial differential equations and comparing the predictions with laboratory experiments. iii) We will examine the formation of secondary and tertiary dendrite arms and determine the evolution of the fractal dimension of a mushy layer. iv) We will analyse double-diffusive effects associated with solidification and examine mechanisms of dendrite fragmentation.
