The programme aims to develop control techniques and dynamic models for advanced electric motor drives and their integration into higher-level control systems. Attention will be focused on the switched reluctance drive, which is currently precluded from high-performance control applications (e.g. servo drives) by the lack of control techniques that provide low torque ripple, fast torque response, high stability and profiled motion control including speeds near zero. The work required is both theoretical, involving the development of control architectures and dynamic models in software; and practical, involving the design and testing of new integrated controls. Attention will be given to the question of position feedback, including operation with and without shaft position transducers. Because these drives are not amenable to Park's transformation they cannot use field-oriented control, and therefore the theoretical work will address the nonlinear mathematical modelling on a fundamental level, aiming to develop a rigorous basis for the work on control techniques and architectures. The programme will include comparative work on AC drive systems based on induction synchronous PM, and synchronous reluctance motors.
