Summary on Grant Application Form
We will determine the dynamic, elastic, plastic and failure properties of cohesive particulate materials, using vibration transmission tests performed upon compacts of material placed upon vibrating planes with horizontal and vertical lines of action. Sample size and shape will be varied. Elastic properties will be determined at low accelerations, and failure properties at high accelerations, using rapid data collection techniques. Results will be interpreted in terms of continuum and structural models, and data will be compared with properties determined at low rates of strain in conventional equipment. Material properties will be varied in a systematic manner to evaluate mechanisms and aid modelling, including particle size distribution, shape, moisture content and surface properties. Results will be applied to industrial situations by a series of scale-up tests. Attention will be given to boundary conditions and the project will culminate in trials on pilot plant at British Steel, to test the application of fundamental data to larger plant.
