Summary on Grant Application Form |
Support is requested for a numerical study of the effects of the leading edge shape on transition taking place under free-steam turbulence. The method of Direct Numerical Simulation, successfully applied to the problem of transition under turbulence in a recent grant, will be significantly extended in order to further our understanding of this crucial influence on the position and character of transition. In particular, the manner in which leading edge separations influence and are influenced by the transition to turbulence is not well understood. The work has particular relevance to the flow in turbine engines, where the flow from upstream blades impinges on those downstream, but is also of importance in a number of other aerospace applications. We wish to build on the success of the current project in order to advance available knowledge of this complex but industrially important process. We expect simultaneously to advance substantially the technique of numerical simulation by the introduction of coordinate transformation and new methods of pressure solution.
