The aim of the proposed project is to extend our cold modelling work on surface-to-suspension heat transfer in circulating fluidised beds (CFB) to high temperatures and confirm the relationship between heat transfer coefficient and mean suspension density, superficial gas velocity and solids circulation flux. At an early stage, the effect of the length of the heat transfer measurement section on the value of the measured heat transfer coefficient will be established.In addition we aim to establish the effect of particle size on heat transfer coefficient, to confirm the link between local fluctuations in particle flux and temperature fluctuations in the suspension, and to establish the contribution of radiant heat transfer and its variation with mean suspension density and the local suspension density near to the riser wall.The proposed project will use the circulating fluidised bed combustor designed and constructed under the SERC-funded project (GR/F 92039) to study factors influencing emission of nitrogen oxides from CFB combustors involving collaboration between Leeds and Bradford Universities. The project will make effective use of SERC resources already deployed whilst capitalising on the expertise in this research area developed at the universities of Bradford and Leeds over recent years.
