Summary on Grant Application Form
1.To synthesise an appropriate selection of compounds immbolised on silica (of the form SiOx where X is the immobilised compound) and well-defined crosslinked formaldehyde novalak (methylene bridged) resins and polystyrene divinylbenzene networks to model aspects of coal and waste/biomass conversion processes.2.To use the solid probes, together with pure cellulose to model the release of volatiles and extent of secondary reactions during pyrolysis. Special attention will be paid to the beneficial but hitherto largely unexplored effects of using hydrogen pressure in the production of liquids from ste/biomass.3.For coal liquefaction, to use the probes to help delineate the physical and chemical effects of H-donor solvents.
