To investigate, theoretically and practically, the distributed implementation of tuple-space systems To study the application of the tuple-space model of parallel processing to low and intermediate-level image processing problems.Progress:The first year of this two-year project has focused on the embedding of the LINDA tuple-space model into the (imperative) set-based language, ISETL. This has involved the development of a distributed tuple-space kernel on a multitransputer system (MEIKO Computing Surface), along with the software interface from ISETL to the kernel and the addition of the LINDA primitive access operations into the syntax of ISETL.Both of these tasks have been completed on time, and have resulted in one conference paper on the distributed tuple-space kernel implementation being accepted (WoTUG 95), and a second paper on the ISETL embedding submitted for the EURO-PAR '95 conference. The project is now moving into the second phase (and the second year) by progressing on three fronts: a) the development of a Gofer (functional language) embedding so that the expressibility of the two programming styles can be compared, b) initiating the development of a set of image processing algorithms in the ISETL-LINDA system (this is being undertaken partly by a research student, and a paper on the initial results of implementing the Hough transform algorithm is being prepared), and c) developing a new distributed tuple-space kernel with an emphasis on improving its performance. All these tasks are consistent with the original plan in the project proposal. Currently, all tasks are on time.
