Summary on Grant Application Form
Reliable methods are required for the determination of the molecular mass (MM) distribution of the products of coal processing. While size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is commonly applied, agreement is generally poor between SEC-determined MM distributions and those indicated by currently-applied mass spectrometric (MS) techniques. The aim of this project is to devise new SEC methods in which the relationship between MM and retention for coal-derived molecules is better defined and to calibrate these methods by laser desorption/ionisation MS.New SEC mobile (including supercritical fluid) and stationary phases will be tested for aromatic substances. The products of coal pyrolysis and liquefaction under conditions minimising secondary reactions will then be separated by preparative SEC. The MM distributions of these fractions will be determined by laser MS methods newly developed. The SEC retention behaviour of these fractions will be used to calibrate procedures for the determination of MM distributions of a full range of coal processing products supplied by British Coal.
