Summary on Grant Application Form
Following a promising feasibility study, the programme aims at development of a new technique for diesel exhaust particulate filtration, based on exhaust gas cooling to achieve particle growth and multiple cyclones for final separation or concentration into an EGR flow. Using an existing rig with a 2.5 litre DI diesel engine, the particular growth potential of the pre-cyclone heat exchanger will be quantified as a function of coolant temperature and engine operating conditions. Particulate concentration and flow rate will be measured by filtration in a dilution tunnel and size distributions by differential-mobility analyser. Clarification of the physical mechanisms leading to particulate growth will be sought from unburned hydrocarbon measurements, before testing a new compact heat exchanger. Performance of various multiple cyclone configurations, with prior particulate growth, will be assessed; a separate experimental simulation will be used to identify deposition behaviour in a single cyclone. An existing numerical model will be enhanced to improve representation of sub-micron particle motion then used for comparison with experimental results and for sensitivity studies.
