Summary on Grant Application Form |
As proposer of the workpackage, Imperial College will develop models of power electronics devices to examine methods of wind turbine/windfarm steady-state and dynamic control. The work will examine the use of FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems), i.e. high power electronics devices such as thyristor/GTO based SVCs and thyristor controlled resistive brakes to control both the steady-state and dynamic behaviour of wind turbines/farms. The models will be fully integrated with dynamic models of single grid connected horizontal axis wind turbines and the proposed dynamic equivalent models of windfarms. Special emphasis will be placed on equipment siting, network topology, the import/export of real/reactive power, wind excited oscillations, component interaction and methods to improve both the steady-state (e.g. reactive compensation) and dynamic characteristics (e.g. damping of wind-excited oscillations) of the system. Conclusions will be drawn with regard to the models and strategies developed.
