If the operating range of turbocharger compressors is to be maintained as pressure ratio increases it will be necessary to (I) ensure that high efficiency is extended into the high flow regions, thereby delaying the cut-off point at the 60% efficiency level, and (ii) suppress the tendency to surge. The proposed investigation will concentrate on the application of guide vanes in the usually vaneless space downstream of the impeller of a turbocharger compressor. These guide vanes will not necessarily be diffuser vanes as the purpose is to extend the operating range, particularly at surge, and it may be necessary to turn the fluid towards the radial direction and accelerate it. Preliminary studies have shown that wide aspect ratio vanes in the discharge region of the vaneless space extends the choke flow region and improves the overall efficiency and pressure ratio. It is possible that these vanes could be deployed permanently. In order to address the problem at surge the possible application of a variable geometry concept will be considered with a view to suppressing the development of instabilities at low flow rates.
