Present test methods for ensuring that electrical equipment conforms to the required European standards, soon to become mandatory, for unwanted emissions of electromagnetic radiation require the use of an open area test site (OATS) or a large semi-anechoic test chamber. The former option demands land in an electrically quiet, and therefore inconvenient, location while the latter is very expensive. The subject of this proposal is the development of analytical and experimental techniques whereby testing may be carried out in an inexpensive metal walled test chamber and the measured results mathematically transformed to the values which would have been measured in an OATS. Despite the enormous potential of this type of technique for reducing the cost of EMC testing, little work has so far been reported. Preliminary trials carried out at Bristol have yielded predictions within 5dB of open area measurements and it is expected that further work will lead to improvements in this figure.
