A programme of work is proposed to develop and assess the capabilities of centralised control strategies on the attenuation of synchronous, non-synchronous and transient rotor vibrations. Robustness properties will also be considered and the design and implementation of a strategy will also be considered and the design and implementation of a strategy based on H-infinity optimisation is considered to be of vital importance in this area. The comparisons will be made using a rig consisting of a flexible rotor supported by two magnetic bearings. The configuration of the rig will be variable and , together with the introduction of known modelling error and defined measurement error, the level of control and robustness will be quantified.The rig will be designed and, using established in-house magnetic bearing manufacture techniques, will be assembled. Optimal, centralised control strategies will be designed, implemented and referenced against decentralised strategies. The rig tests will then determine the control and robustness properties for each strategy.The work will yield a design procedure for the optimal, robust centralised control of a flexible rotor/two magnetic bearing system. This procedure will be capable of covering more general systems and the project will provide an important degree of validation.
