Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will investigate the effects of chaotic and other nonlinear responses on the fatigue life of mechanical systems with clearances. Modelling of a system which can represent either a bearing with a clearance or a tube rattling in a support with a clearance will be undertaken and the responses examined using standard rainflow analysis techniques and Miner's cumulative fatigue assessment as well as spectral analysis and chaos techniques. Complementary experimental work will be undertaken on existing and new rigs. A second system comprising a main 2 degree of freedom system with a smaller subsystem mounted on it will then be modelled and simulated. The sub-system will be designed to ensure that in normal operating conditions the subsystem vibration is minimal. The system will then be operated in regimes where chaotic or other nonlinear responses occur and the fatigue damage on the subsystem assessed. Again complementary experimental work will be undertaken. It is hoped that the results will have application in condition monitoring and fatigue life prediction in systems having the severe nonlinearities resulting from clearances.
