Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme is designed to investigate the vortex generation mechanism of an air jet and to set up a numerical model of the flow backed by a well planned wind tunnel experimental study. The air jets to be investigated are both pitched and skewed to an oncoming cross-stream. the interaction of the jet and the oncoming flow will produce a strong longitudinal vortex. The mixing promotion ability of the vortex can be used to control separations on aircraft external surfaces, in gas turbine installations, in wind tunnels and on ships, etc. Heat transfer can also be enhanced. The air jets are likely to have significant advantages over the commonly used vane-type vortex generators and to have potential for a much wider range of applications in branches of engineering involving fluid flow. In the present study, the numerical investigation will study a number of control parameters. The resulting numerical model will be checked by the experimental study. By the end of the three-year programme, design guidelines of the air jet vortex generator will be produced for industrial applications.
