This project will assemble ceramic membranes into stacks, and test their performance in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell application. A novel design of SOFC stacks has been proposed, and this will be demonstrated by building a small scale (50 x 50 mm) test rig. This rig will allow sealing, manifolding, current collection and control problems to be studies on small samples. The intention then is to scale-up to realistic sizes (200 x 100 mm) of membrane which will be supplied by the materials development programme at Keele. A large test rig will be built to test several cells at this size. Sealing manifolding and current collection issues can then be observed directly. Finally, many plates will be stacked together to obtain a stack of reasonable power output which will allow thermal balances to be measured. The intention is to have close connection between this testing work and the membrane manufacture, so that rapid evolution and optimisation of the design can occur.
