Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme of research centres on the special facility for hot plane strain compression testing available in the Department. This computer controlled equipment enables tests to be carried out under constant deformation conditions or under varying conditions to simulate industrial processing. Most of the project will be carried out on 3 steels of standard grades, with time available for tests on development grades. Three series of tests and associated metallographic study will be undertaken; (i) a matrix of single deformation tests to determine the basic constitutive relationships for hot strength, (ii) a limited matrix of double deformation tests to assess the validity of previously proposed equations for microstructural evolution to these steel grades, (iii) simulation of industrial conditions of changing temperature and strain rate to assess the reliability of applying the relationships from (i) and (ii) in a model for multi-pass section rolling. Specific combinations of required deformation variables will be obtained from the FEM model being developed at British Steel.
