This project aims to investigate the use of alternative materials in automotive brakes in order both to improve braking stability and to reduce vehicle weights. In particular, a replacement for the traditional cast iron brake rotor will be sought, probably in some form of light alloy metal matrix composite. The composition of the brake lining material will also be investigated since it is the interaction between the lining and rotor materials which determine the characteristics of the brake. The experience and expertise of the participants will firstly be pooled to quantify the expectations and material requirements of modern braking systems. Existing software techniques and experimental facilities will be enhanced and validated using current brake designs for which MMC rotors are available. From the results and experience gained, alternative designs will be derived to maximise the potential of advanced materials in braking applications. New material combinations will also be specified which may for example involve surface treatment of the MMC rotor to improve the tribological characteristics at the friction interface. Finally, prototype or model tests will be carried out to validate the new designs and material combinations.
