Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the research programme is to develop the dynamical theory (due to Ambegaokar et al) of the response of vortices near the Kosterlitz Thouless transition in superfluid and superconducting films to an applied a.c. drive. For low drives we expect to see deviations from linear response which have a shape which is characteristic of the Kosterlitz Thouless transition. For much higher drives, or for lower frequencies, the response is different and emanates from the increase in the density of free vortices, liberated by the drive. The first aim is to develop the theory for both regimes and examine the crossover between them. The non-linearity leads to harmonics which can best be detected in superconducting films. We aim to calculate the amplitude of the harmonics and the nonlinear response of a thin superconducting film when currents in the film are induced by an a.c. magnetic field. By comparing with experiments on high and low Tc superconducting films, performed in Nottingham, we hope to test the theory and to see whether thicker samples also show evidence of the Kosterlitz Thouless transition.
