Development of materials and optimisation of their processing is critically dependent on adequate understanding of their atomic scale structure. A major aim of this project is to develop 170 solid state NMR into a characterisation method for oxide materials. Two main objectives have been clearly identified in order to reach this goal. Paramount is the need to fully understand the sensitivity of 170 NMR interaction parameters (eg chemical shift, electric field gradient) to structural influences (ie nearest neighbour type, site geometry etc). To achieve this, the second main objective is to produce a coherent and wide ranging series of 170 enriched compounds with well defined oxygen sites. The targeted systems are based around the technologically important oxides TiO and ZrO, and include titanates, zirconates and phases formed with SiO2 and SiO2-A12O3. 170 NMR will then be used to provide information about the less well defined structures which occur in advanced processing techniques (eg sol-gel) as these are notoriously difficult to characterise by standard methods such as x-ray diffraction due to the largely amorphous and/or finely divided nature of the materials. The 170 NMR methodology will provide a crucial microscopic insight into oxides by identification of the different oxygen environments in amorphous gels and their changes with heat treatment.
