Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to establish a UK workstation at FELIX for time-resolved nonlinear optical and magneto-optical spectroscopy. We propose to investigate the following systems: a) narrow gap materials such as In(As,Sb), In(Al,Sb), InAs/GaSb/AlSb, (GaIn)Sb/InAs combinations; b) doping superlattice nipi structures based on narrow gap III-V (InAs) and II-VI (PbTe) systems (all of which show large quantum confinement effects which would be studied, together with electron sub-band dynamics, by nonlinear optical and magneto-optical techniques); c) GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells and heterostructures, sub-band spectroscopy (study of conduction and valence band/sub-band dynamics at energies below and above the optical phonon frequency using nonlinear optical and magneto-optical spectroscopy); d) double barrier resonant tunnelling structures (GaAs/AlGaAs), nonlinear sub-band spectroscopy in 5 to 15 micron region; e) this community has considerable experience with ultra-fast detector and mode-locking semiconductor systems for this wavelength range, and would use the FEL to make some of the crucial lifetime and scattering measurements.
