Summary on Grant Application Form
Through its close association with the research laboratories of Nuclear Electric at Berkeley the industrial mathematics group at Strathclyde University has built up a strong research record in this area. This proposal is concerned with extending and carrying forward this work. Further developments of the basic phase-space model are still necessary: Brownian motion, gravity effects and the effects of particle diameter on particle surface interaction will be incorporated. Phase-space and mass momentum models recently derived by the Russians and the French will be compared with Reeks' approach and all three will be assessed against experimental data. Although a standard 2-phase model can be used in the bulk fluid, this breaks down in the boundary layer and the kinetic approach needs to be used to obtain the appropriate wall functions which will then supply the correct boundary conditions for the bulk flow. The numerical analysis of the underlying method requires to be analysed and fully tested.
