Summary on Grant Application Form
Techniques have been developed by the applicant, with very recent improvements due to SERC funding of MS, HPLC and FT-IR instruments, which are capable of allowing analysis of the full range of pyrolysis products of polymers and additives. This application seeks support to enable a postdoctoral worker, who has recent experience working with the research group and using these techniques, to continue present work on aspects of the pyrolysis of PVC compositions and subsequently to study the pyrolysis of antioxidants, photostabilisers and polymer compositions containing these additives. Particular objectives of these studies are to identify environmentally undesirable products and examine their mechanisms of formation. This worker would also be involved in the wider environmentally-related work of the group, which includes investigations of the thermal stability of biodegradable polyesters.
