The research will investigate the use of ultrasonic velocity and thermal expansion measurements for the detection of hydrides in zirconium and titanium. These materials exhib a stable hydride at room temperature, following absorption of hydrogen, causing embrittlement. The proposal is to measure the temperature at which these hydrides dissociate to form free hydrogen. This will be done by heating the samples to elevated temperatures, monitoring the ultrasonic velocity and thermal expansion properties as a function of temperature. At the transition temperature, a change in both these properties is expected. As the actual temperature at which this occurs is dependent on the original concentration of hydrogen present, measuring this temperature should lead to a method for estimating absorbed hydrogen content nondestructively. Trial experiments, already conducted by the applicant have demonstrated that both ultrasonic and thermal expansion methods have potential for determining the required transition temperature.
