Summary on Grant Application Form |
There are two main objectives of this research. The first is to optically and MO characterise Co/Pt multilayers and use resulting data in the design of novel, phase and amplitude optimised, tri-layer systems to enhance the polar Kerr effect for MO readout. These devices will be fabricated and their optical and MO performance compared with theoretical predictions. At the same time their magnetic and structural properties will also be examined. A second objective will be to test exciting theoretical predictions of the potential of metal/dielectric (M/D) multilayered media for the purposes of MO recording. It is intended to demonstrate that M/D systems can be fabricated with useful thermo-magnetic properties and that their readout potential is independent of the choice of dielectric and sub-layer thicknesses. The latter may be achieved through their incorporation into a suitable tri-layer structure. The optical, magneto-optical, magnetic and structural properties of the media will be examined in collaboration between Salford University and Queen's University Belfast.
