Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed programme will combine the unique capabilities of atomic force microscopy (in-situ surface imaging at atomic resolution) with the extensive crystal growth experience, expertise and facilities (kinetic measurements, optical interferometry, optical microscopy and x-ray topography) at Stratyclyde. This combination will allow the evaluation of a range of key, unresolved questions concerning fundamental aspects of crystal growth behaviour from solution in the following areas: 1) activity of growth centres (hillocks); 2) temperature and kinetical roughening transitions; 3) impurity and solvent effects on crystal growth mechanisms. A central objective will be to utilise the results of the proposed studies in a critical examination of existing crystal growth gheory which, to a large extent, lacks in direct experimental confirmation in these areas.
