Summary on Grant Application Form |
Synthesis, in situ in optical/dielectric cells, of novel Anisotropic Hybrid Materials of two types (i) crosslinked LC networks (ii) linearly-polymerised polymer films will be undertaken. Different sample alignments wrt the ITO glass electrodes of the cells will be prepared. Type (i) materials, made by photopolymerisation of diacrylate/liquid crystal solutions in UV/visible light, will exhibit properties in common with liquid crystals and polymer networks (gels, elastomers). Type (ii) materials, made by linear photopolymerisation of cinnamate prepolymers in polarised UV light, will have anisotropic bulk and surface properties. The latter will be used to direct alignment in thermotropic liquid crystals. Optical, spectroscopic, electro-optical and dielectric properties of these anisotropic films will be studied using specialised techniques at Swansea. Dichroic spectra (UV/visible and IR) will be used to determine molecular orientation in the films. The results will be analysed quantitatively in terms of molecular structure, orientation and the anisotropic molecular dynamics of groups. It is anticipated that new anisotropic hybrid materials that are linearly polymerised liquid crystal networks will emerge as a result of these researches.
