Summary on Grant Application Form |
At Heriot-Watt polycrystalline diamond films are to be deposited by microwave plasma CVD from hydrogen and methane, and then exposed to doses of thermal energy atoms from hydrogen, oxygen, or nitrogen sources at QUB, in order to modify their surface topography and electrical conductance. Films will also be grown by the microwave technique, but will be exposed to a beam of nitrogen atoms during the growth cycle, to modify their electrical conductance. Atomic hydrogen beams will also be investigated for their ability to enhance the etching of non-diamond carbon incorporated into the growing films, compared with that normally provided by hydrogen excited in the microwave growth plasma. In a new development at QUB, films will be deposited from hydrogen and either hydrocarbon or carbon beam sources. All films will be characterised by a range of techniques at Heriot-Watt and elsewhere in the UK, to establish their diamond quality and to investigate the improvement achieved in reducing surface roughness and the effectiveness of electrical doping. The ultimate objective is to produce PN junctions in planarised diamond films.
