Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to characterise the manufacture of thermoplastic matrix composites by the powder impregnation route and to model the mechanism of impregnation. A thermoplastic pultrusion line funded by SERC under a previous grant has been modified to enable powder impregnation to be carried out and will be used to manufacture powder impregnated precursors. Studies will also be carried out with commercially available powder impregnated precursors. The key activity of the programme will be an investigation of the mechanisms by which the molten polymer flows to wet-out the fibres in the prepreg. The wet-out process will be studied by subjecting the powder impregnated fibre to various combinations of thermal and pressure history. This will be carried out in a squeeze flow rheometer, which will enable the course of the impregnation process to be followed from the load displacement trace. Microscopy studies will also take place. A rheological model for the powder impregnation process, already developed by the applicant, will be refined and used to model the process.
