Summary on Grant Application Form
The use of 2D infrared spectroscopy to monitor structural changes consequent upon strain is established. We wish to extend the existing measurements to infrared and Raman and to correlate AC spectral changes to Tan loss data recorded coincidently. In this way, we plan to monitor the structural changes that occur in natural rubber under stress and the role of both the polybutadiene and polystyrene rich phases in thermoplastic BSR under strain. In the process, we will be able to unambiguously assign Tan features to structural perturbations.Coincidently with this work we plan to investigate the strain fields in epoxy matrices close to Kevlar and glass fibres under stress in composites. We also plan to investigate the role of microvoids and water penetration in degrading mechanical performance, again using 2D I.R and Raman data coupled to dynamic mechanical measurements. Liquid crystalline nematic phases under AC electrical fields are known to respond in an unexpected way. This too will be investigated and extended towards mesophases in liquid crystalline polymers.
