Summary on Grant Application Form |
The La2-xBaxCuO4 series of oxides shows not only a maximum in superconducting transition temperature near x = 0.16, but also a deep, narrow minimum near x = 1/8, associated with a low temperature structural transition. We have recently observed a coexistence of a magnetic and a superconducting fraction in Sr-doped La1.875(Ba,Sr)0.125CuO4 systems. We propose to follow this remarkable interplay among lattice distortions, doping, magnetism and superconductivity on these and related systems using a number of experimental techniques (conductivity, susceptibility, x-ray and neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, mSR) as a function of temperature and pressure and attempt to unravel the origin of the coexistence (phase separation or microdomain formation). We also propsoe to use synthesis at elevated pressures to prepare (1) oxygen-rich phases and investigate how the various phase boundaries or miscibility gaps are affected, and (2) novel oxides which are unstable at ambient pressure (electron-doped T' phases of small lanthanides). Finally, we intend to pursue the synthesis of oxide phases which are symmetrically doped by either electrons or holes, and investigate their conducting and magnetic properties.
