Summary on Grant Application Form |
Fibre reinforced ceramic-matrix composites with SiC and Si3N4-based matrices will be fabrica from appropriate polymer precursors and both carbon and SiC fibres by adapting procedures already used for carbon-carbon composites. Successive infiltration-sintering operations will be used to densify the composites. The development of pores and cracks and the subsequent matrix microstructures will be systematically monitored to elucidate the influence of fibre-matrix interactions on the fabrication process which is to be expected based on knowledge of carbon-carbon processing. Carbon-ceramic composites will also be fabricated by varying the precursor used in successive infiltrations and the location within the composite will be varied by manipulating the fibre-matrix interaction which controls pore development. Composite properties will be related to microstructure and fibre-matrix interactions. Oxidation resistance will be assessed. An important aim will be to improve the oxidation resistance of carbon-based composites. The mechanical and chemical properties of ceramic and carbon-ceramic matrix composites with the same fibre and architecture will be directly compared.
