Summary on Grant Application Form
The research involves complementary activities at Nottingham and Sheffield on Fe-Al based and related intermetallics that show potential for elevated temperature applications in oxidising environments such as in turbo chargers and chemical plant. The work at Nottingham will concentrate on controlled solid state processing of blended elemental powders using controlled reaction milling and sintering coupled with Hipping and/or extrusion. The work at Sheffield will evaluate (i) melting, melt-treatment and thin section (<10mm) casting followed by cold or warm rolling with intermediate and final heat treatments; (ii) spray-deposition to form fully or partially dense preforms up to 10 mm thick for hot and cold rolling to strip again with intermediate heat treatments for comparison with (i); and (iii) co-rolling and/or co-extrusion of alternately stacked elemental sheet/foil or blended elemental powder preforms under conditions that form the intermetallic by interdiffusion during high temperature treatment. Microstructures at each stage of processing will be characterised by combinations of optical metallography, x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy and related to property characterisation by combinations of hardness, short term tensile, wear, oxidation and creep testing as appropriate.
