Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose a three year programme for support of research into the production, microstructural characterisation and electrical and magnetic properties of precision-sputter deposited magnetic thin films and multilayers with parallel aims of increasing fundamental understanding and optimising materials for device and sensor applications with particular reference to giant magnetoresistive (GMR) phenomena. The proposal covers work on, (i) structure-property relationships in well-characterised GMR multilayers (including incommensurate and hard-soft multilayers) with particular reference to the relation of magnetic sub-structure and defect structure to magnetoresistive behaviour, (ii) the use of MFM and AFM techniques to investigate nanoscale magnetic structure and micromagnetic response of GMR multilayers, (iii) the identification of dominant transport processes and scattering mechanisms by parallel studies of the temperature variation of resistivity in magnetic and non-magnetic multilayers, (iv) the development and assessment of device and sensor structures using advanced 'in-house' lithographic and patterning facilities.
