We have recently succeeded in identifying a well-defined correlation between Tc and the temperature dependence of the excess specific heat contribution Cex in a series of La2-xSrxCuO4 samples measured at low temperatures. This result not only brings into question previous interpretations of the form of the intrinsic low temperature specific heat in high Tc superconductors, but also calls for an investigation of other systems to search for a similar correlation. We propose to carry out specific heat measurements between 0.02K and 4.2K to determine accurately the form of this excess specific heat term for several selected series of compounds. These measurements will also be carried out in magnetic fields up to 8 Tesla, since C(T,B) measurements on YBa2CU3O7 have revealed an unusual behaviour of Cex in the presence of magnetic field, thus suggesting a magnetic origin. Magnetic field measurements will also allow us to separate the magnetic and quadrupolar contributions to the nuclear specific heat seen at very low temperatures, and from this, we will extract information on the effective internal fields in each sample which, together with the information of Cex(T.B), should prove helpful in understanding the role of magnetic ordering in high Tc superconductivity.
