Summary on Grant Application Form
To develop new laboratory methods for evaluating the steady state fracture properties of viscoelastic materials. This is when the only energy available to the crack tip is that stored in the material for a long period and has reached a stress-relaxed state. The requirement is to obtain the threshold load to just maintain a propagating crack and then how crack velocity and fracture surfaces vary with load up to the limiting crack velocity conditions. The technique also needs to be developed for evaluating steady state fracture of brittle and other materials. An objective is to make a wide comparison of the fracture properties of structural materials. This is to include impact as well as steady state fracture referred to above. To assist in this study, the intention is to develop simple models that are able to compare the fracture properties of materials. Needed are models that only require small amounts of data and can be hosted on small computers of the type now being incorporated in laboratory equipment.
