Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this proposal is to prepare calamitic, rod-like, liquid crystals that contain macrocyclic rings. Each material will be designed to exhibit nematic and/or Smectic C phases over wide temperature ranges, thereby, producing a liquid crystal material that carries a cavity in its structure. Chirality will be built into the structures of the molecules by locating an asymmetric centre into either the mesogenic unit or the macrocyclic ring. This will lead to the materials being cholesteric and/or ferroelectric. Thus, the compounds could be thermochromic or exhibit a spontaneous polarization. We expect that complexation processes with suitable guests will lead to changes in these properties, thereby yielding a novel set of molecular sensing materials.
