We are asking for a SQUID magnetometer, liquid helium and manpower to enable us to prepare and study new inorganic materials whose magnetic or electronic properties fall into the following broad categories. 1) Antiferromagnets whose topology makes it impossible to satisfy simultaneously the desire of every nearest neighbour moment to be antiparallel. This property, called frustration, gives rise to new forms of magnetic ordering, excitations and phase transitions. It underpins spin-glass behaviour and influences the magnetic properties of the high Tc superconducting cuprates. 2) Insulating magnetic films for fundamental and applied research. 3) Molecular magnets with f-/d-orbital exchange; these may provide new ferrimagnets. 4) Borderline localised-itinerant electron behaviour for the elucidation of the laws that decide whether a material shows insulating, metallic or superconducting properties. Complementary structural, electronic and magnetic characterisation is planned; this will involve detailed x-ray, neutron scattering, ESR, mSR and conductivity measurements. We also propose to establish a facility for the routine, sensitive study of magnetic or superconducting materials which will serve the North of the country. We present support for this in the form of descriptions of research in several other departments which will benefit greatly from such a service.
