Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research will involve the application and development of techniques for the analysis of parametric and non-linear behaviour in the dynamics of discs with frictional loads. Existing work on flutter instabilities in disc brakes (funded by the Ford Motor Company) will form the starting point for the proposed work. In dynamometer tests subharmonic and superharmonic squeal resonances have been observed and in certain cases seemingly random disc vibrations have occurred. In order to explain such observations it is intended to conduct a programme of research into the parametric resonances of linear and non-linear models, and to investigate the boundaries separating regular and chaotic disc motion in such non-linear models. Analytical and numerical (multi-degree-of-freedom) models will be used. In the former case this will involve the introduction of techniques for critical speed analysis into the area of squeal noise instability, and further development of such techniques. The analytical and numerical results will be validated by performing experimental dynamometer tests.
