Summary on Grant Application Form
The absence of superconductivity in doped spin 1 and spin 3/2 analogues of La2CuO4 is striking, given that they are crystallographically and magnetically homologous. Evidence from structural studies and transport measurements suggest this may be an experimental artefact. This project will examine the simplest electronic model for the materials, a generalisation of the t-J model from the spin 1/2 case. Both limits of t/j ->,O (where t is the hopping intregral and j the Hund's rule coupling on each site) will be considered. In the former case a spinless Fermion representation of the electrons will facilitate calculations. A comparison with the ordinary t-J model for spin 1/2 will be made. Possible superconducting states and their association with the appearance of paramagnetism upon doping will be examined.
