Summary on Grant Application Form |
A high load, high frame stiffness nanoindenter will be implanted, with facilities for acoustic emission sensing. It will be applied to hardness and modulus testing of technically important systems, including implanted ceramics, amorphous carbon films, fibre motion in composites, and superhard films including diamond. Particular emphasis will be on quantitative use of acoustic emission to sense test energy release process, and on time dependence of deformation in polymeric films, with the aim of gaining insights into factors controlling the above deformation.
