Summary on Grant Application Form |
The formation of austenite which occurs upon heating low-alloy steels is known as reaustenitisation. Existing phase transformation theory applicable to the formation of austenite is found to be limited in some important respects. Development of quantitative models for microstructural prediction during welding, rolling and heat treatment are currently hampered because theory to describe the kinetics of reaustenitisation is either limited in its applicability, or does not exist at all. The proposed research is concerned with developing quantitative phase transformation theory for reaustenitisation from ferrite/cementite mixtures and ferrite/pearlite microstructures. Reverse time- temperature-transformation (TTT) and continuous heating transformation (CHT) diagrams will be calculated, for a variety of input parameters. Multicomponent alloys will be considered. The results of the calculations will be compared with the available experimental data.
