Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Facility exists to supply the needs of UK scientists for high quality single crystals of oxide superconductors. To do so it must develop the science and the techniques for the growth and characterisation of these materials. In collaboration with Birmingham the Oxford Group has the following priorities: To increase the range of crystals available, adding thallium based crystals and crystals requiring electrochemical growth to the many families already available from Oxford. To make large homogeneous crystals, free of mosaic structure, by the technique of seeded pulling as well as that of spontaneous nucleation. New furnaces of large bore will enable growth to be done on a scale large enough to produce crystals of the size and quality needed for high resolution neutron diffraction and sophisticated transport studies. To reduce the impurity content and to control the oxygen concentration of all crystals, and to enhance the homogeneity of mixed superconductors. To control and modify the orientation of domains in the orthorhombic phases, enabling the role of twin boundaries to be studied. To characterise the essential magnetic and electrical parameters of the crystals supplied. Proposals are made to satisfy the long standing Facility requirement for convenient rapid turn-round access to adequate Electron probe microanalysis facilities.
