Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Southampton Superconductivity Group, which includes members from the Departments of Physics and Chemistry and the Institute of Cryogenics, will continue with both basic and applied research on high temperature superconductors. Novel materials and new phases of known superconductors will be synthesised in the Chemistry Department, some with the aid of a unique high pressure oxygen furnace (900 bar, 1050C). Material stoichiometry and crystal structure, determined by x-ray and neutron diffraction, will be related to electrical and magnetic properties. Magnetisation and magneto-transport studies will be made of both bulk and single crystal samples in the mixed state in order to elucidate the behaviour of vortices in high-Tc materials and develop materials with improved pinning properties. This work will be supported by theoretical studies of vortex dynamics. Wires, tapes, and melt grown bulk samples will be prepared and characterised for their current carrying capabilities as a function of applied magnetic field and temperature. Particular emphasis will be placed throughout the programme on perfecting the processing of thallium based superconductors.
