Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme will address the problems of controllability of superconducting magnets for use in electro-magnetic actuators, with particular application to the requirements of Maglev transportation. The work will establish the limits of controllability, identify optimum magnetic configurations, and assess the practical implications of incorporating superconducting magnets within high performance control loops. An important deliverable will be a demonstration of levitation of a suspended load using a superconducting magnet. The programme will be three stages: a preliminary stage to develop a theoretical basis for controllability, the second stage to give a practical validation with an experimental superconducting magnet, and the final stage to assess a fully controlled magnet.
