Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme is motivated by the need for reduced process costs for advanced structural ceramics coupled with enhanced reliability. Novel (GPS) sintering conditions will be coupled with special sintered liquid additives and nucleation catalysts in promoting selective crystal growth of Si3N4 which will induce high fracture toughness and good creep-rupture properties in silicon nitride ceramics. The mechanisms for sintering under stepped pressure/temperature conditions will be identified by XRD, microscopy and dilatometry. Microstructural parameters (crystal size/anisotropy, intergranular phase/interface constitution etc) will be related to mechanisms for toughening, creep rates and stress-rupture behaviour with an objective to optimise process parameters for specific application. The value of GPS as a supplement to cheap processing routes, as a means of property improvement will be assessed for SRBSN and 'in-situ' Si3N4/TiB2 composites.
