The purpose of the proposed investigation is to get a fundamental understanding of the interplay in diesel combustion between exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), N0x and soot, and the factors that govern this, so that EGR could be used more effectivley to reduce N0x without the penalty of increased soot.Engine tests are proposed which are intended to separate the thermal, chemical, and dilution effects of EGR. A novel technique will be used for controlling the flame temperature.
