Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to obtain p-v diagrams within a Lysholm twin screw machine as it expands a two-phase saturated organic fluid. The data is required to augment the input to computer simulations of this process being carried out under SERC Grant Ref GR/H/73608. Existing test data does not include p-v measurements. It is therefore not possible to allocate reliably the relative internal effects of friction and leakage. The measurements are needed now because progress in the computer modelling has been more rapid than anticipated and the staff required for the relatively short period involved are presently available. The anticipated outcome is the production of a computer code to accurately model and thereby aid the design of efficient two-phase screw expanders. These could raise the efficiency of large scale refrigeration and air conditioning plant and enable the realisation of a high efficiency system for the recovery of power from low grade heat.
